It really varies a lot shoe to shoe. Most shoes will say in the label or on the box if they are animal or not. If not, it will say that it's made of all man-made materials, or something like that. If it doesn't say in the label, you'll have to guess. As a general rule, if it's super cheap, it's probably not leather, but this isn't always true. If you like the brand New Balance, they're all safe. Everything they make is all man-made, including the glue.

any shoes that have leather are not vegetarian.  or any type of silk (since silk comes from an animal).

If you are looking for vegan shoes type your search into yahoo or google search. That's how I found some for my sister. She is not vegan but has severe allergies to the glue used in most shoes. Most shoes have some animal by product. Even if just the glue. And they still do use horses in many glue factories.

Leather shoes are not vegetarian. If you want vegetarian shoes, look for a label that says "all man made materials"

look inside the shoe, it should say what it's made of
