  1. No there isn't, at least not yet.

I really doubt if there would be a perfect or better substitute for oil any time soon. Technology can't give us everything we want. Scientists have been trying to find an alternative for decades but couldn't. They may still find alternatives, but not "better" alternatives.

  2. No.

  3. Sure there are. But the best gallon of fuel is the one you DON'T use.

'Shudder', CONSERVATION... asking people to do with less OMG!

If we would get rid of the 'warming' circuits on computers, tvs, etc, huge amounts of electricity would be saved. If heat in manufacturing and refining industries were used to 'co-generate' their own power, much more would be saved.

And if legislatures (as in Germany) would enact legislation to allow private producers of electricity (windmills and solar panels in backyards) to get ease of access onto the electrical grid and preferential rates for 'green power', many people would invest in producing power for their own use.

There are ALL kinds of substitutions for combustion engines, but we have an entire infrastructure (cars, service stations, gas bars) that DEPEND on the continuation of the carbon economy.

    Peace
