Can someone please help?

I've looked at so many pictures and read so many descriptions that everything I see now looks like poison ivy.

These are 2 photos of a vine growing up a tree to a height of about 3ft. It doesn't appear to be running along the ground or among the other weeds and plants surrounding the tree.

I've been yanking up weeds in my yard and around this tree for over 25 years, half the time without wearing gloves. This is the first time I've noticed "leaves in three".

Thanks

  1. Yup, that is it!  Get out the Roundup and wear the gloves when weeding.  Could be the poison ivy was never there before and it is just getting started.

  3. Yes - that is poison ivy.

  4. 100% yes!

  5. Yes, they do look like poison ivy.  A couple of things that can help you further determine if it's poison ivy: the stem is "woody", there may be small clusters of light green/yellowish or white berries and the biggest giveaway is if you look closely at the leaves they will have little dark brown or black specks.  Poison ivy/oak/sumac contain urushiol which is the chemical that causes the allergic reaction.  When these plants are even slightly bruised the urushiol will seep out.  Exposure to air causes the urushiol to become a brown or black color.  Put on a glove, put a leaf in a ziploc bag and squish it up.  If after a few minutes there are brown sappy spots in the bag then you can be sure it's PI.
