  1. I'm not sure. its a tough question. I think that with the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer being written, people have questioned their belefis or justified them even more. Interesting.

  5. Yes, it was on TV the other night, "Vampires in America".

  6. NO!

  7. Vampirism is a myth common in many cultures and has an interesting place in the history of human fears (and the unknown):

    - The bloodsuckers are not always human.

    - Many stories revolve around using the blood of victims for immortality or were used to explain mysterious deaths in the village.

    - Not surprisingly, humans are, in general, quite curious about their mortality and back in the middle ages and lots of folks died due to "mysterious" (to them) causes.

    - Add to this certain rare medical conditions (that produce an affinity for blood, pale skin or pain by sunlight) and tales begin to gain "proof".

    - Further, when the recently buried were dug up, it appeared that their teeth and nails had grown (gums and skin, shrink when they dry).

All together, these create one heck of an explanation to a medieval superstitious society.

These same stories then carried over into the present. The kicker is that most people who claim to be vampires (and mean the dracula kind) can't get their story straight: the problem is that most of these myths were similar but independant of each other so had differing particulars based oin their region of origin. And all were subject to changes in their retelling over the years - so no two myths agree on all accounts.

This is why people today can claim different "facts" about vampire biology/characteristics.

    Interesting side note:

Bram Stoker (the one who created the vampire we know today) was not inspired by Vlad the Impaler as many think; he borrowed Vlad's name after he had written the work.

  8. They aren't real in the sense of supernatural beings, but there are diseases that make people sensitive to the light, and diseases that make people have a thirst for blood, and to grow fang like teeth. They can't fly around and turn into bats though!

  9. Yes.
