  1. From my own personal experience, no, Yorkies are not good with children.  Generally speaking, small breeds like that are not known as good "homes with small children" dogs.  For a great family pet, I suggest a lab or just a good ol' mutt.  Very few dogs don't shed.  Perhaps you could look into getting a Malti-poo (Maltese Poodle mix).  I honestly don't know much about their temperament though.

  2. From personal experience, yes they are. My Yorkie is only 3 1/2 pounds and she LOVES my baby, you just have to teach the baby to be gentle (which is easiest to do if you start very young). My dog has never bitten or growled at my son, adn he has done some awful pulling and smacking to her in the past.

Other breeds that may be good as well are Poodles, maltese, and shih tzu's. (for small dogs)

One suggestion though is that you get a puppy to grow up with your kids so that they are both used to each other and it's less traumatic for the dog.

  3. We have had 3, but one died, I considered the passed on yorkie like my brother growing up with him through my childhood. As for the other two they get along great with my sister and me so yea get a yorkie. Hope this helped you ;)

  4. They can be ok with older kids but they are extremely small and easy to hurt and they are very snappy when they are scared so they are more likely to snap at younger children trying to grab them.

Shihtzus seem to be a little nicer of a breed, mine is great with my kids and they can be very wild.  They do require a lot of care though with the long fur but i have allergies and so don't my boys and we do ok with her.

  5. Small breeds tend to be snappy and yappy with kids.  I don't recommend a small/toy breed for a family pet unless your children are older (10+ years).

I know from personal experience that German shepherds, labrador retrievers, border collies, and beagles are all good with kids (for the most part).  Those are some of the most family friendly dogs.

We have a husky/golden lab mix and she is wonderful with our kids.  She's gentle around the baby, she plays with our son, and she's very protective of them.  She alerts me when the baby cries (it's cute, she paces between me and the baby).  She doesn't bark and has never growled or shown aggression towards anyone.  We love her.  She's wonderful family dog that is protective and sweet.

  6. In my experience no they aren't. My mil & sis inlaw have them & they are snippy to my kids. My kids have never done anything to them either.
