Asking all Brits?

Thanks for letting me know that the word Brits is a faux pas.

I wouldn't have thought that anyone would treat you badly because of your accent, why would they? Britain has one of the most culturally diverse populations that you can find and the best thing about eclecticism is equality.

Word to the wise though, don't use the word "Brits". British is the preferred term.

Britain is full of Americans and as far as i know they are well liked over here so you should have no problems. I am from the county of Cumbria in northern England and it may well be different down south or in London but i doubt it.

yeah i believe it should work in your favour the whole accent thing... personally i was at university last year and met 2 canadian girls and a canadian guy in the students union... we got chatting and had some great craic.

Bottom line is if you don't try these things you will always wonder, and there is nothing worse than a "if only...."

I once toured with an american girlfriend of mine (I'm a scottish native), and she had no trouble.  If anything completely the opposite, in that folk commented on her s**y accent and all (she was from california), much to my consternation! lol

Why would we be rude??

There's loads of Americans in Britain, I live in a town near Newcastle and there are Americans over here all year round so were used to hearing the accent.

No! That's such a stereotype. I'm from oxford/London before that and we love visitors. This is a silly question =P They might have a bit of a laugh at it, but if your not even American then probably won't even bother.

Im from the North West and I dont think you will get treated poorly. I do howeve guarentee that people will mock you (just for fun!) Its what us 'Brits' do! In my Uni the Americans were very popular. Good luck and be prepared for the bad weather. Ha!

The UK is a nation of different accents and we have a long history of welcoming visitors. If you treat us well we will treat you well. As you say you are not American perhaps you could change your accent? South East England

Depends where in the u.k. you are moving to if you move to Scotland or wales and make the American mistake of calling them England you will be asking for the urine to be extracted. However in the majority of cases geography will make no discernible difference to how people treat you.

The majority of British people are very accommodating to foreign nationals.

In England you may get rudeness if you spoke with the wrong regional accent but not an American accent. It's attitude that matters. If you are open and friendly, especially in the North, you will only get friendliness back. By the way the Central Lancs Uni in Preston is a very successful

College. (I'm only showing my regional bias)

im from scotland and i know you are going to england but i really dont think anyone will treat you rudely or poorly due to your accent, they will probably be more interested in you to see where you are from and stuff

Seriosly, you shouldn't expect any rudeness unless you conform to the 'stupid american' stereotype. If someone does that, call them out. This will prove you're not stupid and daunt them.

Please refer to us as British or English and then if you're nice to people they will be nice to you. I live in North West Kent (on the edge of London)

You'll probably be asked all the time where you come from, but I imagine people on the whole will find your accent appealing and it may even work in your favour.

We don't get many American accents in these parts however, it would make you sound rather exotic and exciting I think!

We're not that bad!! I wouldn't treat anyone differently because of their accent, after all the UK is full of different accents.

I am from the North East of England, but currently live in Hertfordshire.  I wouldn't treat you rudely if you had an American accent.

I have had a good laugh reading some of the responses to your question.  As an American living in England (east midlands to be exact) I still get the odd...'Oh what a lovely accent, where are you from' daily.  I have a southern accent (my family is from NC)  but for some reason people misconstrue it as Canadian.  Eh?!!  (What a mook!) Eh?

But seriously, I have fallen in love with the country.  The only truly rude people I have come across are foreigners!  

Most people think I am crazy for moving here, from Florida.  My daughter is 9 and loves the school here.  Yes she has put up with a bit of teasing, about the accent and our words, like pants to me are trousers to them.  A purse to me is a wallet to them.  But all in all noone has been rude or nasty.  

Oh and before some of ya'll start in on the immigrant thing, my husband is English.  I did not move here to take government hand outs.  Or steal housing.  We are here for family reasons...and your beautiful (yes beautiful!!) weather.    

At least I am not having to worry if there is a gator waiting by my back door, or a snake coming up the toilet pipes! Or waiting 3 weeks for electricity and water to come back on after a hurricane.  

  

  My husbands favourite retort when asked why am I here is, he went to Disney and brought me back as a souvenir!

Oh and one more thing...spelling!! A car has tyres, add a 'u' to things like colour or favourite..and it is enrol in college not enroll.  You use a cheque to pay bills.  

Good luck in school!  Have fun!  And pack for warmth!  (Good all weather coat is a must...because a sunny morning will turn very windy and rainy then freezing then warm again!)

dont call us brits cos thats like us calling you a yank....you may get treated rudely because americans are quite stupid but then again you may not get treated poorly or w.e, if i met you i probably wouldnt give you the time of day but thats just me i dont like americans (Y)

They may take the pi ss a tiney bit  - just like americans do with our accent when we go over there

There used to be a lad at school called Brian who had an american accent - most of the kids used to copy his accent and repeat of alot of words he used to say - a bit like a parrot!
