Astigmatism Question?

I know Astigmatism can be "corrected" with special contact lenses (tonic) . However, does that mean that it just corrects it temporarily (like only while u wear it) or does it actually reshape ur eye and help reduce the irregularly in the eye over time (even when not wearing them)? In other words, does wearing contact lenses help "mask" the problem or does it actually affect ur eye's shape in the long run,

  1. i'm pretty sure that it wouldn't reshape your eyes and correct your vision like that.

  2. Toric lenses have cylinder that correct for astigmatism. Soft lenses just give you clear vision and do not reshape your eye. Hard lenses can be made to do either, depending on your eye and how it is shaped and what your doctor thinks you might consider one way or another. It is a reallyl interresting thing to ask you r doctor and to consider.  Cornea reshaping lenses can reshape your eye little by little and give you good vision without your lenses enventually, only having to wear them a couple times a week.  However, once you stop using them your eyes will go back to how they naturally are.  The only permanent way to change them is with Surgery. But, yeah, ask your doctor about figuring out what is best for you. They measure your corneal thicknesses, and look at tear layers and all sorts of funky things so it is hard for anyone here to give you the information you need to make the decision without your doctor's input. Good luck!

  3. I believe the special contact lenses are called toric. I have astigmatism as well and wear gas permeable "hard" lenses. These contact lenses do correct your astigmatism while you wear them even if you have a strong astigmatism correction, but after you take them out your eyes do go back to their non-corrected shape (astigmatism eyes are more football shaped I have been told).  During wear of the lenses it corrects your eye so that it is more similar to a normal visioned eye. I have heard of vision programs through the use of different fitting contact lenses that "train" your eye to see more normally until you do not need any glasses or contact lenses again, but it is a lengthy process and your degree of correction cannot be too strong.

  4. No, contacts are meant to temporarily correct vision. It's not going to change the shape of your cornea(the part that is curved with astigmatism).

  5. Yes, only when u wear it. Wearing any kinds of lenses will change the eye shape.
