At&t sim card...

I have a cell phone with at&t and my phone is having
problemscharging. I don't have insurance and I'm not elligible for
upgrade yet.I was told that I can buy a prepaid at&t phone and put
my currentsim card in the prepaid phone and it will work the same. Is
that true?
