Ati control panel on laptop?

My daughters laptop is having problems it comes up saying the ati control panel failed to untialize because no ati driver is installed or ati driver is not working properly. What does this mean? The laptop was working fine yesterday while I was on it then it just shut off what I was doing and went to a blue screen. Talked about restarted. When I did then the screen was black. My daughter ran the discs she has for it last night and now at least windows will come up but computer doesn't stay on longer than about 5 mins or so and shuts down. Need to know how to fix what is wrong if anyone knows please.

hi check the power saving functions, if that fails use the system restore facility to restore back to a time when it last worked properly, more below, or if this fails, boot from your windows cd, select the repair option, via the recovery console, enter LOGON to get to your system and then type CHKDSK /R this will check and repair any errors.

you need to replace the video driver (software) witch you can download from its manufacturer web site ie www.compaq.com
