Are there any pay phones in Auckland Airport that we'll let me call to the usa?

Yes.  Coin, phone-card and credit-card telephones are located throughout the terminal. Phone-cards are sold at :

Airways Florist, ground floor arrivals area

Baggage Services Shop, ground floor

Visitor Information Centre, ground floor, near arrivals

The Collection Point, first floor, airside

Whitcoulls, located on the ground and first floors.

Yes, there are plenty of shops with phone cards, phones available, and friendly sales folks to help you. When I was there I noticed my US based cell phone worked just fine as well. It was a little expensive to call, but it worked... text messages too!
