Question:

Audio and DVI to HDMI?

I want to connect my computer up to a new HD TV. I already have a 50ft s-video and audio cables going out to it but I want better quality because at maximum I can squeeze a 1074 by 768 resolution through it without cutting off parts of the screen. I have a nice Nvidia card (512mb) with a bunch of hookups like component, two DVI's, and s-video. I also have a nice fatal1ty gaming sound card with I think both digital and analog outputs. Is there any way or adapter to combine the sound and the video together into a HDMI.

  1. You can buy a DVI to HDMI adaptor, or a DVI to HDMI cable for video and a separate audio cable for audio.

Connect DVI video from PC to HDMI in HDTV

Connect audio out from PC to HDMI audio on HDTVs (all HDTVs have at least one HDMI with separate audio for this particular reason).

By the way, the best resolution you can squeeze out of s-video is 480i.

  2. I'll give this a try.  But my suggestion is to keep audio and video separate.

Your dvi output from your Nvidia card will give you high definition video, but no audio.  You can get an adapter cable from Radio Shack to go from dvi on your computer to HDMI on your TV.   You also may have to go into the Nvidia software and make some changes.

For audio, the simplest route is probably from your computer sound card output,(a single plug) to an audio input on your tv (red & white double plug).  These are probably the audio cables you already have.   This will give you stereo, but not surround sound.  Most computer audio cards don't generate surround sound.  If you have an audio card that will, then it probably will have an optical audio output.  If so, check your TV and see if has optical audio input and if it does, get one of those cables from Radio Shack and you're in business.
