  1. I've heard them used and honestly they're not great.  It just depends on what you're auditioning for.  If you are auditioning for a school production or something that you are paying a fee to participate in and you sing the song very well, then I doubt it matters.  if you are auditioning for regional or professional theatre I would choose something else.  You must be a boy but I can't tell if you're a teen or what.  Why not just post your age and vocal range and ask for suggestions?  If you know what show and role you're auditioning for that would be very helpful.  If you're just looking for pieces to add to your repetoire, just say that.

BTW, Newsies does have some cred as a musical.

  2. If I were you I would stick with stage musical songs unless you are auditioning with a children's theatre company.  Also when choosing from stage musicals stay away from anything Annie, Wicked, Hairspray, Les Misrables, or Cinderella.  All of the songs are overdone and you won't stand out.  Good Luck!!!!

  3. I want to agree with Marianne in part, but also others offer some valid suggestions.

Certainly, unless directed to, you should not equate your audition to the actual production.

In the sense of being a casting director, the song is likely of less importance than your range and stage presence. It may be that your LOOK is either a benefit or detractor, also, depending on factors such as age appropriateness, any part you might actually be auditioning for.

In those, and other senses, it can't hurt you to know the songs in the piece, and compare them to hundreds or thousands of others, similar.

With no real offense to the Disney machine, who I used to work for, they are very specific in context to a specific piece of work, and already have likely been heard by any casting director, to the point of hoping to never hear them again.

  4. Depends on what it's for... some other Disney show or kids show? fine.

    Anything else? Probably not.

  5. Anythings Fine, they only care about how good your voice is.
