Question:

August cruise?

Hi! My husband and I want to plan a last minute cruise to somewhere in the Carribean for our 1 year anniversary in early to mid August. My only concern is the weather. I have never been on a cruise before (my husband has) but I'm a little nervous b/c I get motion sickness and I'm concerned about hurricanes and rough seas. Has anyone gone on a cruise during this time and can you tell me a little about it? Also- any suggestion on what cruise line? We were thinking possibly Princess? Royal Carribean? We are both in our early 30's and we want a mix of everything. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. Hey!I have been on 14 cruises most to the Caribbean. The month of August is a great time for cruising! Princess has very very good food and royal Caribbean has great entertainment. So i guess its really and itinerary thing but if is possible I strongly suggest visiting St. Thomas!

    Good Luck!!!!!=)

  3. There is an advantage that cruise ships have over land based hotels.  They move.  This means that if a hurricane is coming, the cruise ship will go somewhere else.  If you are on a western Caribbean route and a hurricane is headed your way, you might find that the cruise goes to the eastern Caribbean.  You will still have fun, but you will go to different ports.  Lets see a land based hotel do this.

    I went on a cruise to the Caribbean in August 2004.  We had great weather.  The people that boarded the ship the day I disembarked ended up on a nine night cruise instead of a seven night cruise because the hurricane was over Miami and the ship could not dock.

    Because of this you should buy insurance.  Here is a link to a site that offers several different policies ...

    I get sea sick easily and I have never gotten sea sick on a cruise ship (they are big and don't rock too much).  Nonetheless, for one cruise I did take ginger twice per day.  Ginger tablets can be obtained at any drug store (CVC, Sav-on, Walgreens ...).

    As to cruise lines for your age group, I recommend either Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL or Princess.

  4. We  went last August and had awesome weather we actually had much rougher weather when we went in December .I'm pretty sure if they can avoid bad spots they try to because 2000 seasick passengers isn't cool.I have always traveled with Carnival so I cant recommend the others.

  5. First of all, you will love your cruise. Second, you might get some really great deals, but airfare and or room availability might be your only problem. Weather should not be a concern. As for hurricane season the ships have radars in the bridge ( The area where the ship is controlled from) and they pay very close attention and if a storm is coming they do everything to avoid the storm even if that means redirecting a ship to a different port. Also, take some dramamine on the cruise, and take it the first day you are getting onto the ship, and then every day until you get off the ship and maybe even a few days after. Also the ship has stabilizers so you shouldnt really feel the ship moving, unless its really rough seas due to a storm, but you should be fine, and on older ships the stabilizers arent as good. Also, I was on a Mexican Rivera cruise and experienced some extremely rough tides, and green apples help, along with lemon in your water and or tea, or just sucking the juice straight out of them, as it calms your stomach. Also eating very little and not being by windows helps, and vanilla ice cream also tends to settle the stomach. I'm not sure why, but all these things in combination with sea sickness pills helped me out tremendously, and I am one that doesnt get sea sick often.

    Cruise Lines:

    Carnival is for the younger crowd you may get some really great deals, but be prepared for alot of drinking, gambling, and partying until late at night. This is a party cruise, and you get what you pay for, and sometimes things are way under par, depending on the cruise ship and cruise that you are doing.

    Royal Caribbean would probably be your best bet. It is more family oriented and a little more romantic and the ships are bigger and better with more things to do, and more exotic itineraries. I would definitely recommend checking this cruise line out. I would definitely recommend paying a little extra for what you will receive as this is one of the best cruise lines ever...

    Princess is more of a retirement age group of people that are retired or may be a little older and tend to have an older crowd with less activities, and exotic destinations and things to do. I also think that they are a little more expensive and don't offer the quality that some other cruise lines offer.

    Celebrity may be another cruise line that might interest you. They are fabulous. I love their ships sizes, and the food is absolutely amazing. The best I have ever had. The crew are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I think that this would definitely be worth doing. They are a tad more expensive but definitely worth it and they may not have the activities but they make up for it in alot of other departments like entertainment and food. It is just amazing...

    NCL has the freestyle cruising and its okay, but its not the best. They definitely do not offer what you pay for. They are way under par. Some people love this cruise line and others hate it, as the crew I have heard are extremely rude and unpolite and I heard that the ships arent as nice, but its really just the basic and they charge way to much for something that is just not as good as others for the same amount of money. Good Luck...

    Holland America also is more expensive and tends to have an older crowd and I think that their are better cruises so I wouldn't recommend this particular cruise line.

    Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Celebrity are your best options. Let me know if you need anymore help.
