Question:

Australia? Going for a year?

Hi all,

I'm going to Australia for a year this summer. I may do some seasonal (fruit picking) work and stay another year, depending on how much I like it.

I am looking for any advice on where is the best place to start, I'm currently thinking Sydney. Where would be the best place to find work, willing to try anything, have no trade so would be looking for entry level type work. I have some experience working at plumbing, in a butchers, factory work, forklift driving, arc welding and and some other stuff but no certs for any of these. I have E.C.D.L. and some other Computer certs.

I am also looking for advice on finding a flat. I'll be staying in a hostel more than likely for a few days to start with and would be looking for something cheap in a nice enough area after that, preferable sharing.

Any advice on those would be great. Any other advice on anything would be welcomed too, pubs, clubs, things to do and the like.

Thanks in advance,

Fly.

  1. Im from Aus and I reckon youll love it over here. Every traveller Ive met seems to enjoy themselves. Theres plenty to see and do. So...

First things first. A job. You sound pretty educated about travel so Im sure you know you'd need a working visa etc to be able to work here. The best way about going for a job is to look online, I know a great site that pulls job listings from all the job sites on the internet at give you a full list. This is the link:  https://jobsearch.gov.au/Login/Login.asp...

(You just have to type in Sydney and it will bring up all the jobs available).

I think it would be wise to stay in a hostel while your looking for a flat or a place to live. If your looking for shared accomodation then you could look in papers for houses to rent (shared). You could also just head down to real estates and ask them for a list of all the rental properties. The usually give you a print out which includes the address, rent per week and house details. You can also check out this website:

    http://www.realestate.com.au/

(Type in Sydney or a particular suburb and youre off!)

There's lots to see and do in Sydney so I've got a list of the top 100 things to do... here's the link: http://www.sydney100.com/

From there you could move up the coast (theres more North than there is South). These are the palces Id suggest you have a look at on your way north:

    -Newcastle and surrounding areas

    -Port Macquarie

    -Coffs Harbour

    -Byron Bay

-The Gold Coast (dont forget to do the theme parks... movie world, sea world, wet n wild and dreamworld)

    -Brisbane

-You could keep going north to the Sunshine coast and go to the great barrier reef and fraser island

A few other places Id suggest visiting include:

-Melbourne (if you like architecture or shopping its the place to be)

    -Canberra (to see Australias history)

-Darwin/Alice Springs (the true outback... and dont forget to go to Uluru)

-Katherine (head up into the National Parks there. Its simply amazing)

    Hope you enjoy your stay!
