how long does it take to apply for an Australian passport, if one is an Australian citizen. Im a south african dual citizen, ive applied for and recieved a south african passport. Do I need an australian passport as well?

Before asking for an Australian passport, find out if that excludes you from holding duel citizenships. I know a lot from overseas, but only those with USA passports have duel citizenship to my knowledge.

If you're travelling between Australia and other countries, you will be expected to use your Australian passport to re-enter Australia. It usually takes 3 or 4 weeks, but if you pay for express processing, it only takes a week or less if everything is in order.

The issue of an Australian Citizenship Certificate will take on average ten working days.

The issue of a full validity Australian Passport will take a further ten working days. Parents should take this into account when planning travel with newborn children.

So it looks like the turn around is usually about 4 weeks.

Prior to 2004, South Africa in principle did not recognise the multiple citizenship of its nationals unless the citizen applied for an exemption or permission letter under a 1995 law permitting South African citizens to travel using foreign passports.

Since 2004, South African dual nationals may travel without hindrance as long as they enter and leave South Africa on their South African passports. Dual nationals may petition for temporary, emergency or "permanent" South African passports for this purpose.

However, a South African citizen who by a formal and voluntary act acquires the citizenship of another country, automatically loses his or her South African citizenship unless they apply for, and receive permission to retain their South African citizenship before acquiring the citizenship of another country
