Austria---ATM usage?

My husband is going to Austria from the USA. We have ATM cards, and I just wondered if the machines in Europe use 4 digits like the ATMs in the US. Our ATM card is affiliated with VISA.

  1. I've used a debit card backed by VISA in Austria without any problem; the machines at the train stations are quite good. My PIN was four digits, and there were no problems. The fees were a bit heavy, IMO, but I still got my money.

  2. I was advised when going to Europe to use ATM machines at larger banking establishments to get the best exchange rates. Never had a problem with my 4 digit pin. One thing that you may want to do is advise your local bank that you will be making overseas withdrawals or purchases. The fraud department put a hold on my Mom's card because of overseas activity. My card was fine. Have a great trip! Austria is a wonderful place!

  3. If you want to use your ATM card overseas, keep in mind that many ATM's abroad, particularly in Europe, do not accept PIN's that are longer than four digits.

If your ATM card is linked to the PLUS or Cirrus networks, you have the option of using it to obtain cash virtually anywhere in the U.S. and in over 135 countries worldwide. Before you leave home with just your ATM card, make sure that the Cirrus or PLUS networks are readily available where you're going. While PLUS and Cirrus ATM's are increasingly common overseas, they are still only available at a limited number of banks in selected countries. Cirrus and PLUS have ATM locators online:
