Average Size of Landfill?

Question

I am working on my persuasive essay, and it's about mandatory recycling. I went on google & EPA.org and tried to find the average size of landfill and the % land that are now landfills (in U.S.), but I couldn't find anything.

Can someone help me with this research?

I know the 2 in my area are 50 acres

The EPA keeps a list of landfills in the US (link provided), although I am unclear if those are only municipal landfills, or if there are also privately-owned landfills in the list.  You might want to browse through that site to see if there is some summary data there.

I also found a report that has some statistics on US landfills, but I'm not sure how recent the data is.  One quote is:  "There were 3,536 active municipal landfills in the United States in 1995 according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Today, about 55 percent of America's trash (more than 220 million tons annually) is disposed of in landfills. "  Again, I've provided a link.
