  1. i didnt get it either. in fact i didnt get any of the covers in the twilight series. but i absolutely loved the books! one of my favorite series.

  2. I'm not 100% sure, but what I think it might be, is that Edward could be the White Queen, and Bella could be the Red Pawn Symbolizing that she is new a world she has never ventured in and that Edward is Leading her.

  3. Stephenie Meyer says she interprets it in two ways -

1- It's Bella through the whole 4 books.  In the beginning she's not really key (like the queen) but in the end she's the most important player.

2- The ending "battle" was all mental, like a game of chess.

  4. in a mtv interview steph said that it was bella as a human and bella as a vampire

  5. Meyer said that it represents Bella. From the Red (Human) Pawn, "the weakest player". To the White (Vampire) Queen "the strongest player". Plus Bella's life was like a game of chess.

  6. in the game of chess the pawn (red piece) that's the weakest piece in the game. so bella (red) is the weakest person in the book. the white piece/ the queen is the strongest piece (volturi) so its like bella is defeating the volturi even though she is the weakest

  7. In an interview Stephenie Meyer said it represented two things. The pieces both represent Bella. The red pawn is Bella in her human form, weak and insignificant. But in her Vampire form, the white queen, she is powerful and the most important defense. The chess concept itself was supposed to allude to the fact that there would be no physical battle in the end, but it would be a strategic, mental battle.
