Baby at 21?

My husband and I want to try for a baby. We are only 21. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having children young?

The only disadvantage really is judgmental people saying you are to you.

Advantages are you are young so you will still be "young" when they are growing up which helps with energy level to keep up with them and isn't such a huge generation gap.  You have less risk of some birthdefects.  You can have fun with your kids.  Most of the woman in my moms side of the family had their first baby at 21-22 years old and it seemed to work out good for them (including myself).

If you're married, have a home that isn't filthy, and are in a financial situation that would support a kid (diapers are expensive!) then go for it!  There really is no reason not to.  It's your life, don't let people judge.  However, as you are only 21 you haven't had a very long time to experience the whole "college" like stage of your life. (aka the going out every night stuff).  You can't go out all the time with a child, and especially not with a newborn.  Are you ready to give up all that?

honestly there are only pluses in having a child as a younger mom. You have more time and more energy. And biologically its better as you baby has a bigger chance of being healthy and your body is able to restore itself and the recovery is quicker and better.

WELL I DONT THINK THERE ARE GONNA BE ANY DISADVANTAGES BECAUSE 1  YOUR NOT THAT YOUNG COMPARED TO THE TEENS THAT ARE HAVING KIDS....SO I THINK U WILL DO WELL ALL U HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT KIDS WILL BE KIDS SO DONT GET MAD TOO FAST AND LET THEM LIVE...BUT DO MAKE SURE YOU ARE THEIR PARENTS AND NOT THEIR FRIENDS....GOOD LUCK ;)

I agree with due in October about being young while the children are grown up.  When the baby is 18 you'll be 39, still young enough to party.  One disadvantage would be seeing all your friends go out and party while you stay home, but if you don't mind then it won't be a problem.  I had my first baby at 21, and she's healthy and happy.  Plus, you get to play with toys again.  If you have an education already (because it will be hard to start again with a baby... daycare is no joke), are financially stable, and you don't mind staying home most of the time, it should be a great adventure.

well, im 21. my husband is 31, so i guess its a little diff., but i mean there are a lot of people who have babies younger, and do just fine... so far i've never had anyone say anything about my age as far as having the baby, more just people upset b.c i decided not to keep working after i got preg. as i was having a lot of dizziness and fainting spells, and mood swings that made it very difficult to handle a regular job... so, i think work is the biggest issue, but also the economy is really bad down here right now. (in new orleans) so, just make sure money is secure. i think thats your biggest challenge.

the advantages are you will have joy in your life it will be hard but you will love every minute of the baby. make sure you are really in love because you dont want to have a broken family. i lived thru 9 years of h**l to keep my children around their father and was unhappy we were in love before and afterwards things changed. not to say you will experience the same. i wish you the best of luck and i hope you do have your little blessing if it happens it was meant to be.

the only thing is you would have to incorporate baby in everything you do.if your ok with that. and done partyin it up then go for it 100%

I had my first at 20. I would not trade her for the world. The only thing I wish is that my husband and I would have gotten to spend a little more time together. We never have time together with a 20 month old. We are having our second in September. Like I said I wouldn't trade it for the world. I don't know what I would do without her now. Also I am still trying to finish school. I should have been done 2 yrs ago I only have 3 classes left. I hope I can get it done soon. If you know the both of you are ready, I say go for it. There is nothing better than having a child. Good Luck!!

I had my daughter when I was 21.  People are very judgemental about your age, whether or not your married (I am too) but as long as you can not worry about that (which you shouldn't!) then no problem there.  I found I have loads of energy, I was pretty relaxed about it all - the pregnancy and birth, and after she was born.  I had no preconceptions from seeing friends with their kids and could decide for myself how to raise her.  I have all the energy in the world to play with her, I will be young enough to relate to her when she is a teen.  I'd say as long as you can afford it, and feel satisfied that you and your husband are ready, then go for it!

As long as your in a good relationship and can support a child go for it.  Your married, but what about money? Do you make enough to support a baby? I was a month shy of turning 23 when my daughter was born, and we have no prob at all.

I had my 1st at 18, 2nd at 21, 3rd at 25.

It's fun being young and growing up with them, if you will.

Plus, when they all hopefully move out after college, we'll still be young enough to enjoy life.

Disadvantages - financially kids are expensive!!!
