Question:

Baby bunnies?

My rabbit gave birth to 6 little babies, but we didn't check in time... The dad got to them first. Is it normal for the dads to eat the babies? =( Now there's only one left, but its made it through four weeks of being a baby! All three bunnies are happily living together but what is the normal age for a bunny to be weaned?

  1. Actually it's more common for the MOTHER to eat the babies. Are you sure that it was the father?

Bunnies are normally weaned at about 6 weeks, 4 weeks at the earliest. You should have seen it start to eat solids already.

Why did you leave the male in with the female? Didn't you know that he could have impregnated the mom AGAIN and that it's not healthy for her to be pregnant again so soon? If the baby is a female, she can also get pregnant as soon as she is about 3 months old.

If you want all your bunnies to live together, you need to get some of them fixed before they breed again.

Kelly Bean, thank you, that's exactly why I asked those questions.

  2. Uh i don't know what that one lady is talking about because a non fixed male and female shouldn't even be in the same cage in the first place for that reason. weaning? mm well you should keep the babies with the mother untel about 6 to 8 weeks then they need to be removed.

  3. Why would you keep the male and female in the same cage? That wasn't smart.  You never keep a male and female together unless they are neutered.  It is a shame that they were eaten.  Mine had a litter but the dad was in a separate cage.  All but one survived because she fell out of the cage and the floor was too cold for her.  Mine are four and a half weeks now.  They are eating now and drinking water but I think they should be with the mom for another couple of weeks.
