Backpacking Italy?

Question

My boyfriend and I would like to backpack around Italy for a couple of weeks next Spring. We'd like to do it as cheaply as possible but neither of us are students and although hostels aren't a problem we don't want to stay in dorms. We'd like to take in Rome and Naples and Pompeii and some coast too. Can anyone give us any info on where to stay/how much to budget/how easy it is to travel between places and ways of doing this? Thank you!!! Any info/experience or useful links all appreciated!

for the sea i suggest you to go in sicilia, or calabria, or puglia or sardegna(south italy and isles).

do you prefer bed and breakfast or all inclusive?

the price for a week of sea are 500 euro in agoust...

for rome, i advise you to go(in the evening) in campo de fiori, trastevere, lungotevere, isola tiberina!

sounds like fun, go to the book store and read up on Italy they have travel books on places to stay and eat that are cheap and/or exp. either way they show you a wide price range which you could calculate out and budget yourself. You dont even have to buy the book (sounds bad) but boarders or barnes and nobles have a great selection of travel books you can look at and read, without really needing to buy them if cost is an issue.

Hi,

* For cheap flights, look on SkyScanner.net (link below)

* For where to stay, look on HostelWorld.com (link below) where you can read reviews of hostels and pick the best one for you in each city.

* For travelling around, check TrenItalia.com (link below) where you can book trains in advance, check schedules and plan your journeys.

* For your budget, on Hostelworld see the price of your bed, and multiply by 3 or 4 - that will give you a decent daily budget (for a guide, I budgeted around €50 Euros a day for myself including the hostels)

One final point, I recommend you take in Florence for 3 or 4 days with a day trip to Siena - and stay at the best hostel in Italy, the Ostello Gallo d'Oro which is 3 minutes walk from the Duomo and the Academia (where Michelangelos stunning masterpiece 'David' is)!

In Rome and Florence, definitely take a walking tour so you get the most out of what you're looking at from an expert!

Also for hiking and stunning scenery, go to Cinque Terre for a few days - you won't regret it!

There are many cheap hostels in Italy. Most of them tend to be in the cities and larger towns.

Spring is a good time to travel Italy, just keep clear of Easter when things are either closed, crowded or just plain expensive.

There is an excellent railway system on both coasts, inland can be a bit hit and miss.

The cheapest accommodation is of course camp sites, but unless to have or can borrow lightweight gear the investment would not be worthwhile for a few weeks.

There's already a lot of answers on hostels; here are some alternatives.

This is a good site for hotels in Italy.: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/...

You can sort hotels by specific area within the city, price and other criteria. There are also reviews by people who have stayed in the hotels. Many of the cheaper options will be in the suburbs around a given location, but it's usually cheap and easy to get into the tourist areas using public transportation.

You might be also interested into looking into convents as a relatively cheap lodging alternative. The site below has information about convents in Rome and other places in Italy where they accept travellers. All of these include breakfast and some offer other meals cheaply. My brother and his wife stayed at one in Rome and loved it.

One option for saving on lodging is to make longer trips and take the night train. You can get a berth in the train for less than the price of a hotel room and it doesn't use up prime sightseeing time
