  1. I agree with O.G., get an Abu Garcia, I really like the 6500C3 model, after getting this model, you'll be hooked on baitcasters.  I bought mine at walmart for about $70, made in Sweden too.  Mine is mounted on a Berkley 7 ft. rod, cheapie from walmart, and spooled with 65 lb. Power Pro braid, great for catfish and carp.  This reel is like a winch, in a good way. good luck

  2. You're about to make a quantum leap! Baitcasters are a big step up from spincast reels, but it is not an impossible transition. Don't get too frustrated with the backlashing or constant adjusting of the brake and cast control. For starters I would look into something inexpensive, but not cheap. I mean a good quality reel at a good price. Two that come to mind are the Daiwa Megaforce and Daiwa Procaster PT-100 6B. Starting out with baitcasters can make you want to give them up, just keep at it and you'll be glad you did!

  3. Abu Garcia, Shimano, and Pflueger, are three of the best.

  4. ill choose a diawa reel over abu garcia anyday...

  5. Abu Garcia

  6. baitcasters aren't the best for river fishing because you need substatial weight to take the liine off the reel while making a long cast. little baits and light weights are very tough to cast a baitcaster but for bass and crank baiting. worm fishing, jig fishing or anything in lakes they rock. I can even skip cast under docks one of mine. but you have to feel each and every one out there you have to get the gears and retreive speed needed for the type fishing you do most with that reel. I use slow speed for worms and open the drags up to cast long. I use high speed fishing along side jetty's and under piers and docks and slips. you just have to find the most versatle and for the price you can afford after you feel it hold it cast it and retreive it. Try each and every one on for size and get the one that tells you it's the one.

  7. check out e-bay for Pflueger / Shakespeare..  etc.  Penn is good too.

Daiwa makes the high end for Bass Pro....

  8. Abu Garcia has some of the best reels on the market for begginners and for experts... Watch the three how to use a baitcaster videos at the link below.  I go through the best way to use them, and what reels you should start off with... Let me know what you think...

  9. Abu Garcia has a good selection. Anywhere from $50 to $275 and I would recommend the ones that are made in sweden. C3, C4, series are about as tough as you can find.
