  1. Neutralization:

    C9H8O4 (aq) + MOH (aq) → C9H7O4M (aq) + H2O,

    where M is can be sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), etc.

    At elevated temperatures, the acetyl group will get hydrolized off to give salicylate (ortho hydroxy benzoate) and acetate:

    C9H7O4M (aq) + MOH (aq) → C7H5O3M (aq) + C2H3O2M (aq)
