'colt' is just a reference to their age, not their gender.  and it doesn't matter if they never cover a mare in their life.

he had balls, he was a stallion.

actually barbaro was a colt. he died at 4 and colts arent considered stallions until they reach 5. he also had never covered a mare which generally is a requirement for younger horses who have been retired to be considered a stallion..hope this helps
