baseball - if there is a man on 1st base and the hitter at the plate grounds a ball to the pitcher, the pitcher throws to 1st base first for some reason, can the runner that was advancing to second base go back to 1st base if needed since the batter was already out?

  1. Once the hitter is put out at first, the force play is removed. The runner that was originally on first could return to first base as long as he had not yet touched second base.

  2. yes he could. but only after the out is made at first to remove the force play.

lets say they got into a run down. the runner could end up back at first but ideally you would want to be on second.

  3. no once he is safe at a base he cant go back.   and why would he want to?

  4. no, he has to advance to second

  5. Yes. The force was removed as soon as the batter-runner was retired. Fozzy is wrong in saying that the runner would not be able to return if he touched second.

  6. Ya maybe but maybe not the runner always has to advance if there is a open base

  7. YES!!!!Thats why when first base is tagged first on a double play, the SS must tag the runner going to second, there is no longer a force and the runner can return to first base. I am sure, i am an umpire.

  8. If he throws the ball to first to get the batter who grounded the ball out first, the man originally on first can go back. If the fielder throws to second first, then no because you'd be out.
