Question:

Bat Houses?

I am in an area in which the endangered Indiana bat spends it's summers. I'd like to build a bat house to attract them. I need to know if there are any specs that are special to the Inidana bat that need to be considered for the housing. I've been on many websites about the Inidana bat and they don't list any special specs but just want to cover this completely.

  1. getting bats to use a bat house is a long shot, many times they return to the same colony area that they were raised in there droppings contain a colony specific pheromone that has them returning to the same local each year.Always place in a high sun area and paint or stain the bat house black to absorb as much solar heat as possible should be installed as high as safely possible. As for dimensions if the Indiana bat is the same size as the little brown or big brown bat then build it accordingly as they say in the directions should be able to get from any environmental web site or contact your local wildlife officer and they should be able to get you the dimensions you need.

  2. Check out this website:

    http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/woodwork/ww15/

They have installed a number of bat houses near us by the river to keep down flying insects and it seems to be working.

  3. When I build my new home, I plan on building this.  There are many google sites to help you build them.

    100 - 50 bat homes

    25 wood duck homes

500 mud dauber bee nest, a 4"x 4" with 25 holes in it.

3 purple martin house, 1 for me, 1 for dad, 1 for brother, that will hold 25 pairs, each.

  4. Bat houses are easy, just little upside down shoe-boxes made from old palllet lumber and screws. Any handyman can make them. Use properly sized drill bits and 1+5/8 drywall screws.

The hard part is installing them. they should be in an eave of an old building or a tree, this involves climbing. Make sure you have a place to put them before you make them! Do not fall off the ladder!
