  1. I have a beagle, here are some things you should make sure to do:

get those baby proof latches on botton cabinets where garbage is so she wont get into garbage. and make sure if you have food on the table that you push in your chair. Beagles have an extremely strong sense of smell, it only takes a second when you turn your back and she will be eating your food. Believe me, I have lost many meals this way. Make sure you take on walks regularly to keep away from the pudgy fat hereditaryto beagles if you feed too much. Feed in morning and at night. behavioral problems can become because of them being hungary.

    good luck! hope this helps!

beagles are great dogs-dispite their appetite

  2. Take care of her like any other dog.  Good high quality food, training, lot's of love and - beagle specific, don't over feed her.  Beagles are prone to having health problems related to obesity.  And they all seem to have the "I'm starving, please feed me before I die" act down pat.

  3. Beagles are very loving, loyal and intelligent dogs, I think it's great that you are adopting one, I have one myself and I love him to pieces. However, mine is still young and since the one you are adopting is older I cannot tell you exactly what to expect.

I'm sure you know that beagles are hounds usually bred to hunt rabbits and have a very strong urge to follow their noses. As you should with any dog, get a durable and reliable leash, tags with your information, and lots of treats and toys. NEVER TRUST YOUR BEAGLE OFF A LEASH, and I cannot stress that enough. If your new beagle picks up a scent it is almost impossible to stop her from running away to chase it. Once mine took off out the back door someone left open and we didn't get him back until midnight when someone found him and called us.

Beagles are high energy dogs and need exercise usually once or twice a day. Some tend to shed a lot so have a brush and other grooming tools handy. Also beagles have a pretty unique way of barking which sounds like a bark and a howl combined. It's called baying. If you find it to be cute just remember, your neighbors may not. This is why it is very important to train your beagle to prevent unwanted behavior. Try your best to resist feeding her from the table, the looks beagles give you make them look like they're starving and would really like you to share your food. She may not learn as quickly because she is older but you need to be persistent.

Lastly, the most important thing you will need to provide your beagle is LOTS of love. Good luck.

  4. lots of love and attention - a natural quality food, and plenty of excercise are important, beagles are known to have problems with being fatties ;) you will be very happy with a beagle, they are one of the most loving, loyal dogs there are! Basic supplies like food and water dishes, toys, food & treats. For dogs with floppy ears, it's a good idea to clean the ears about every other week to once a week - use a ear cleansing solution and cotton balls, or ear wipes, sold at pet stores. brushing your dogs teeth, especially in an older dog, is also a good idea. if you are adopting, take your adoption papers to a Petco store - show them the papers and they will give you a coupon book with all sorts of good deals like free food and discounts. Have fun with your beagle!!

  5. Beagles are usually very sweet but they have a tendency to get fat so you'll need to go easy on the treats and watch her weight.  Beagles also love to wander off by themselves, sometimes never to be seen again.  Be sure your fence is in good shape and that there are no places she might squeeze through or dig under.  Never take her out off leash.  Once a beagle catches a good scent, it's hard to call it back again.  You can brush your dog with a thing called a "hound glove" or just use a nice Zoom Groom by rubbing it in a circular motion all over her fur.  It should feel good to her.  Give those ear openings a sniff and a look once a week or so.  A bad smell or a lot of black stuff in the ear canal means go to the vet, she's got an infection.  Beagles love to exercise so maybe you can teach her to trot alongside your bike or just give her lots of walks.
