Becoming a teaching assistant

what qualifications do i need to become a teaching assistant? is it something i can do from home or maybe one day a week at college. i have a small baby so cant go to college full time. its something id like to do when the kids go to school. i would rather work in an infant or junior school. please advise, thanks

  1. The system I work in requires that you take a test based on general grade school knowledge.  go for it.  you get the same benefite as a certified teacher and summers off!

    More you work with kids and work towards getting an education the more chance you have.  Most people I know are getting a degree at night in education while working- which is why they are teaching assistance.

  4. You can complete

    CACHE Certificate for Teaching Assistants Level 2 (and then progress to level 3)

    and then volunteer to work for your placement. You can do this part time, I cant recall the number of hours for placement, I think it is 20, plus evening attendance once a week. You can get funding to do this. Schools tend to look for experienced staff with either work experience or quals, so volunteering will give you something for your CV and also give you a taste of what the job role will entail.  It is quite competitive so you need to market yourself well. For the interview you will be required to complete an activity with the children, or be assessed in the classroom as well as a face to face interview  but it is easier than it sounds!
