Beginner bike?

What's a good beginner road bike that's not very expensive? My friend cycles and I think I would be interested in doing it, but most bikes are really expensive...

pick up an inexpensive 2nd hand bike, give it a go, then think about an upgrade if u like it, best thing i ever did!! Personally get a mountain bike!
