  1. Take lessons: you will be a better snowboarder in the long run.  Many resorts have Discovery or Introductory packages that include rental, lift ticket and lesson for an attractive price.  Other than that, just stick to it more than one or two days.  Some people give up too early because it is hard work to learn the beginner skills.

  2. Buy a helmet, make sure your board is at ur chins high or a few inches above it. gear/brand doesnt really matter few tips is before getting on the hill put one leg in your board and begin to push forward off ur free leg and put it on the middle of your board and glide see how comfortable you are the beginning process is tortourous and painful u definately want to know how to stop before doing anything else thats beyond key to helping you not hit someone else or hurt yourself. keep it simple and have a good time

  3. if you aren't going to rent gear, i suggest you buy a snowboard around your chin-nose area. then some bindings and boots would help too. i highly suggest getting lessons from the mountain you plan on going to. it will be very convenient and a lot less painful. basic snow gear for now is fine, but if you go to a place with lots of tow ropes, don't buy brand new gloves because they will just get torn up. snowboarding tips... i learned from the 3 basic rules. 1. always keep your feet 50-50 (balanced). 2. you only use the lower half of your body, from the waist down. and 3. turn lots. (heelside and toeside). GOOD LUCK! =]

  4. Leashes are stupid and pointless with traditional strap-in bindings, so if you have traditional strap-in bindings, don't wear one if you can help it.

If you crash so hard that all four of your binding straps fail, then a little piece of string isn't going to stand a chance.

If you are walking around with your board, your leash will be not be attached anyway.

With step-ins leashes make more sense.  But step-ins suck anyway.

  5. Wow don't only snowboard with your lower half of your body use your whole body and keep your knees bent. Its an athletic stance, remember its a sport. Especially when you start doing tricks you have to use your upperbody for spins ect. Keep that downhill edge up

  6. you should buy a snowboard that goes to about your chin, bindings and boots... your also want goggles, hats,  a stomp pad, wax, a leash, snow pants, a jacket, long socks!,

a lift pass, and glove, you should also think about gettin yourself a pair of longjohns, because the keep you NICE n' WARM!  =]

and if you buy a nice board you should consider buying a lock for it so no scub bags steel it, which happened to me.
