Being a single parent police officer

I am a single parent of a one year old and i'm looking to get into a steady career that offers great benefits and someone mentioned i should try the police force or corrections.

my only concern is finding good 24/7 childcare and being away from my son so long. is there anyone out there who is a police officer raising a child by themselves? is it harder to balance work and time with your child? do you find yourself stressed so much the it affects your relationship with your child?

  1. I'm a mom and a teacher. Let me second you doing something in the education field - if you have any leaning to it whatsover. If not a teacher, then maybe an assistant.

I think as a mom you would reconsider getting into a field which puts you at danger - which both of those you mention surely do. I'll just let you know that I worked as a substitute teacher at a federal correctional facility one summer - and even with a personal alarm, I was scared a bit - and my son was four years old at the time. There were cases of correctional workers, social workers, and nurses having been attacked and/or raped...

I really think you need to find a field which doesn't have shiftwork, so once your child is in school, you are working almost the same hours.

    Wish you luck!

  2. What about becoming a teacher?  And, you get holidays off to be with your one year old.  Summers too!  However, something many people don't know (they think that teachers get paid for those months they aren't teaching - THEY DON'T), unless you spread your salary out for 12 months, you won't have any income for those summer months.  Take the 12 month plan of salary, that is ask your school district so spread out your salary payments for 12 months.

  3. i am a cop and was a  single parent to it can be hard but the benefits are good but sometimes my sister watches my son for me when i work i don't trust his mom at all i am happy my fiance works for a hos[ital so free daycare

  4. I am a retired 9-1-1 Police/Fire Dispatcher.

Many agency's have babysitters for the people who do shift work.  Sometimes it is an officers wife there will be people to assist.

    best wishes great career.
