They are HUGE!  besides looking good on a resume or on a college application becuz they show u are serious but you will learn so much.  Even if you volunteer local. I sugguest doing something a little out of your comfort zone...you will grow from the experience....for example, volunteer for something that will have you lead a group if being b4 a group makes u uncomofortable...it will stretch your brain and u will become more comfortable by doing it.
