Best camera on market?

Question

I am debating between a regular digital camera and the Canon Powershot G9.

im shooting for the price range with a maximum of $3oo but can be flexible.

also, i would like to know the quality of pictures the suggested camera has, so if u have the camera, or know a gallery online from the camera, could you maybe post that as well?

i know this request is extensive, haha, but im so undecided about what i should get!

The G9 is a powerful compact and certainly has a lot of features. If you want to shoot using manual settings then this is a great camera. If you're just going to leave it on automatic then dont bother - you'll be paying for stuff you wont be using. Get a cheap point and shoot from the likes of Fuji, panasonic, nikon, canon, casio etc. Avoid olympus (nice camera but they take XD cards which are slow, unreliable and limited in capacity) and Sony (they use memory sticks - almost as bad as XD, but not quite) go for a camera that takes SD cards.

If you are going to be using manual control over aperture and shutter speed ect then yeah this is a pretty good camera. You miht also want to have a look at some bridge cameras - the ones that look a bit like an SLR but are smalled, like the panasonic FZ series or the Fuji S series. There's various models with verious zooms and features and all feature manual control. The Fuji's have really great colour reproduction and great low light performance - more so than the G9, but then again the G9 has a better lens. The panasonics have amazing lenses and all feature image stabilisation. Some models though tend to suffer from bad digital noise at higher ISO's. I hear the G9 is pretty bad for that in low light too, though to be fair thats an issue with all compact cameras due to the smaller sensor size. Oh that reminds me - dont get carried away by megapixels either - too many megapixels can actually give you a worse quality image than a lower megapixel one. anything above 6 MP is enough for most people. Above 10 MP is really pushing it in a compact.

I'd say go for it. i got mine May 1st and it's great. check dpreview.com for side-by-side comparisons and over-the-top reviews.. but good.
