There is not one best investment. You need to diversify your portfolio. it's like building a football team. You need players on defense, and players who play offense.

Your defensive lineup should consist of experts in the field of fixed return investments. These could be treasury bills, bank CDs, even rent from real estate. They should be well acquainted with medium to long term direction of interest rates. Job number one for these people is capital preservation.

Your offense line up should consist of experts in the field of trading--stock market, foreign exchange, commodities. Their job is capital growth.

You are their coach. Your job is to monitor their performance on a quarterly basis. Are they performing as expected or not? Weed out those who are not performing.

For seasoned investors, I tell my clients to allocate 50% of total portfolio to both defensive line up and offensive line up. If you are not comfortable with that allocation, do 80% defense, and 20% offense.
