  6. Pick up the latest Michelin travel guide for Paris.  It's the best and updated regularly.  You can get it at any big bookstore.

It has everything you need to know and there are walks laid out in easy to use maps.  Plan to use the metro to get around.  It's safe and clean Taxis are OK but get in, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life. I also recommend you take a half day sightseeing tour before you start.  They are easy to book from your travel agent or at your hotel.  These half day tours will give you an idea where everything is and they usually include a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral.

    .

If you're able, plan to to a lot of walking because it's a city that deserves to be seen from ground level.  Use the metro to get from one area to another.  The Louvre is huge and takes the better part of a day to see the major attractions there.

    .

If you feel you have to see Versailles you can join the throngs of tourists that go there everyday to see the mostly empty overly large palace or you could better spend the day seeing the prototype Vaux le Vicomte which is fully furnished and restored never crowded and over all a better value for your time and money.  Take the short train trip to town of Melun from the Gare de Lyon and then take the chateau bus to the estate.  The gardens are magificent and they now have paddle boats on the grand canal and golf carts for the walking impared.
