Bike makes cranking kind of sounds?

I just a bought a trek bike a few days ago and when I tried it out at the store it kept making a cranking sort of sound when in 6th and 7th gear in the back. The guy there said its because the chain is new and things n he said it would get adjusted. So after riding it yesterday and today it still makes those sounds. I called them and they said to bring the bike in. I dont wanna do that because its the second bike i bought ( first one didnt work) and i dont wanna spend any more time with that kind of stuff. So could anyone tell me what to do other than bring the bike in the store?

  1. just try to wear the chain in and put about 20-50 miles on it and see what happens from there


  2. New bikes often need adjustment as parts get used to working with each other.  Most likely:

    1.  Bottom bracket retainer needs to be snugged up.   Unless you have the special tools like I do, its best to let the shop do this.  It only takes a couple minutes.

    2.  Derailleur adjustment.   As the shift cables find the shortest path through the guides, some minor adjustment is usually necessary.

    This is ordinary stuff, and most bike shops offer free adjustments for the first 30 days or so for exactly that reason.

  3. They're offering to look at your bike so let them - at some point in the future you might develop a more serious problem and find your warranty has expired. You can do lots of things other than take the bike to the store but taking your bike to the store should be top of your list of priorities- it's what warranties are for and if you try to fix the problem yourself you might find you have invalidated your warranty. If it were me I'd take it to the store and demand they fixed the problem.

  5. Derailleur Sounds As If Its Out Of Line Just Need Tweaking It Might Bed In After A While But I Think You Could Lose The Noise If It Was Tuned Better If Your That Worried By It Take It Up There And Tell Them To Do It.
