Question:

Biking 40 miles?

I'm planning on biking about 40 miles from the Milwaukee area down to Gurney, Illinois. I have been training by biking about 20 miles a day. I was wondering what supplies I should bring along or any tips any pro bikers have. I have the route all planned out via Google Earth. Thanks!

  1. You don't need the tips of any pro bikers as 40 miles isn't too gruelling a cycle. You need fluids in the form of a couple of bottles of gatorade for example and possibly some of those fancy high energy bars that you pay a fortune for although I usually just have a couple of jam sandwiches. I also carry a small tin of Tyreweld for instant puncture repairs as it saves me carrying tools or a pump etc. and that combined with self sealing inner tubes is usually effective for most punctures. If you've been cycling 20 miles a day then 40 miles will be a cake-walk.

  2. On my 40+ miles rides, I carry an extra tube, CO2 cartridge, CO2 inflator, tire removal tools. These are all small and I carry in the pockets of my jersey. Also, I carry some money if I want to get something to drink at a convenience store. The most important item is a cell phone, in case someone has to help you or you are injured. Use ICE (in case of emergency) before important names. Ex. ICE mom or ICE friend. If you are unconscious, a good Samaritan will know who to call.

  3. You should obviously bring water, a bike tool, patch kit, and hand pump.  40 miles isn't that bad.  My average rides last year were 80 miles total and I could have made them no problem without anything but water.  But it's always good to be safe.  Make sure your bike is clean and maintained and you won't need to use the tool.

  4. In addtion to all of the above, bring your cell phone (put it in a plastic bag in case it rains)

  5. Two spare inner tubes of the right size, air inflation system (like a pump),  a tube patching kit,  two or three tire removal levers (tire irons), something to remove the wheel from the bike (6" adjustable wrench), hand cleaner, a grease rag, and something to carry all this stuff in.  That's all.  Maybe a cell phone too, if you have one.  Your helmet, bike gloves are great if you fall, and a water bottle.   Know how to change out an innertube by practicing before your trip.  Know how to remove and re-install the back wheel.  Grab some food to eat on the way unless you can afford to make a snack stop or two.  If you have been doing 20 you will make 40. Piece of cake!

  6. a lot water, something to eat but it must be small like a nurtaingrain bar thats mostly it if yuor not counting the helmet the types of clothes
