Question:

Birth Control afer baby. IUD?

So I go next week for my 6 week postpartum appt. and to discuss birth control. I'm really considering an IUD over the Nuva Ring (which I used previously and really liked). Does anyone have advice on an IUD? My friend only told me some negative stories that she has heard about IUD's (gaining weight, issues with Dr. inserting it). Please advise.

  1. well the only thing bad I have heard about them is that sometimes they fall out {disappear} and cant be found when you want it taken out and that a woman who wrecked her car had it go through her uterine wall, so those are some disadvantages....

  2. Hello. I have a Mirena iud. I love it. It stays in for five years maximum.

I am older than you ( an easy assumption) but I have had no cramping and hardly any monthly flow for the 3 years I have had mine. Very effective and much safer than the ones out 20 years ago.  It does hurt like an SOB when inserted, but it is like labor, so you are a  pro. The pain ends once the IUD is in. Discuss with gyn.

  3. I have the Paraguard IUD and LOVE it.  It's hormone free, which I like, and i don't have to do anything. NOTHING to remember, which is great for me! I always forget that i even have it! It was a little uncomfortable when the doctor inserted it, but not painful. i took 600mg of advil beforehand and she numbed my cervix a bit. Also, it's supposed to be less painful if you've recently had a baby because you're uterus is naturally enlarged. (so, do it soon).  I had to order the Paraguard IUD from the company itself (paraguard) and it was delivered to my doctor's office.  One piece of advice -- make sure you insurance plan covers contraceptives. Mine doesn't, which i didn't realize and it ended up costs $500. They do have monthly payment plans though.

Pros -- lasts up to 10 years, can have it removed at any time if you want another baby, don't have to do anything, totally painless once it's in your uterus, NO hormones in it, very safe, and very very effective.

Cons -- some light, mid-cycle bleeding during the first few months you have it, has to be inserted by doctor, uncomfortable being inserted (but not painful).

  4. I had a copper IUD for 8 years before I decided to get pregnant and loved it.  No prescriptions, no pills/patches/rings/shots, never have to think about it, and no hormones.  It was also $200 to have placed and that was 8 years of birth control for only $200 versus the $30 a month I was paying for the birth control pill.

After my baby is born I am probably going to switch to Mirena.  Mirena has a very low dose of hormone that only affects the uterus whereas the copper IUD has no hormones.  Some women's periods stop while most just have much lighter periods.  Either way, the amount of hormone is less than most other methods, like the pill or shot.

It does hurt really bad going in, but once it's in you don't have to think about it.

  5. my friend had the IUD for 4 years and had absolutely no complications and very short periods. (no weight gain, no issues with insertion at all)

She took it out last year and got pregnant 3 months later and has a healthy baby.

    She recommends to anyone.

  6. I bleed very heavily with any birth control containing hormones.  i have an IUD that i have had since my 6 week postpartum appointment.  I love it.

You do not have to worry about remembering each day to take a pill.  Or get a shot every three months.  You do not have know before hand you are going to have intercourse to insert diaphragm or stop foreplay to insert if you did not know ahead of time.  It is really effective without hassle.

It hurt a lot to insert IUD. The doctor did not give me warning so I am giving it to you.  But seeing as you just had a baby i am sure you can handle it.  A little advil and I was fine.

Definitely talk with your doctor but I would highly suggest you go ahead with the IUD.

    Congratulations on your new baby.

P.S.  I have lost 15 pounds since insertion.  No weight gain here.

  7. I have the Mirena IUD and love it.  I have not gained weight and the insertion went great.  Aunt Flo was present when it was inserted and I was told by the nurse that it was good because it is easier to insert when you are on your period.  I have had it a little over a year now and do not a period at all.

  8. it depends on what kind you get.. Mirena has hormones, and copper ones do not.

copper ones you will not gain any weight  and they both pretty much feel the same going in.  ITs not comfortable.  But it only lasts a few seconds while they insert it.

IUD's are a wonderful, carefree birth control that is inserted and you don't have to worry about it.   Mirena lasts 5 years, Copper lasts 10 years.

Personally I have a copper one.. I had one for 10 years and on number two now.  I love them.
