I am going to turn 36 in a couple of weeks, smoke about 3-6 cigs daily and taking Sprintec Birthcontrol pills. Well saw mu OBG/YN today and I know it but she reinterated it for me how high risk I am for a stroke. Of course most people would immed. quit smoking right-daaa!! I would love to but i like to smoke and until I dont like it I wont quit. Mu OBG mentioned Mirena. So heres my dilemma. Of course I take BC to not get pregnant but I also take it to stop breaking out in zits. It keeps my skin really clear. I know quit smoking, but does Mirena give off the same stuff as the pill as far as helping my skin. And whats so dangerous about the pill and causing strokes and Mirena's not???

  1. do not use mirena if you are a high stroke rise. mirena is implanted with hormones. there is copper IUD with no hormones and it last for ten years.

  2. Mirena has NO hormons.

    check out webmd.com

    yea what she said

  3. mirena releases less hormones into your system since it is localized to you uterus.  plus mirena does not contain estrogen.  estrogen should not be used by women who have a higher stroke risk such as women who experience migraines with aura (as i do).  copper IUD's cause heavier bleeding with more intense cramping.

    EDIT:

in response to the person that said mirena contains NO hormones: check out the official mirena site

    Q. What is Mirena®?

    A. Mirena® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is an estrogen-free intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) that delivers small amounts of hormone directly to the uterus. Mirena® virtually eliminates the worry of unplanned pregnancy.
