Question:

Boat Trailer Brakes.?

Hi. I bought a boat and trailer used around 3 months ago. I have just finished an extensive refit and refurb of the boat and have now turned my attention to the trailer.

The brakes are rusted up cr@p with the friction material bonding failed and the material floating loosly around the drum. Also the brake cables (teleflex type) are seized solid and require replacement although luckily the hubs, bearings, drum and backplates are in a serviceable condition.

Question: What make of brakes are fitted to a single axle indespension Roller Coaster 8 boat trailer (1500Kgs). Everything is rusted so badly that no manufacturer's names are apparent.

Thanks.

  1. Just take them to the boat shop and thay will tell you ! And sell you all the part,s you need !

  2. Hi, try www.westerntowing.co.uk they supply brake parts or maybe tell u other supplier near to where u live. good luck

  3. Take old stuff to Parts store as mentioned. I suspect though...that for $200 you can bolt up a whole new axle with brakes and hubs....just check to make sure the bolt pattern matches your wheels.

  4. What size wheels does the trailer have. This is the first clue, some use the same size as the Mini, 10 inch, so usually have Mini type brakes.

  5. you can buy complete sets of brakes for most trailers, they are quite common an have only a few styles so you will be able to get the right ones, they come as an assembly with shoes--hardware--and backing plates already essembled, all you need to do is install and run new lines.

  6. You have a bit of a problem. How about the manufacturer? You could take the old brake shoes or pads to your nearest auto parts store and see what they advise. You might also contact a boat sales outfit that sells trailers. they may be able to advise even though they might not have the parts.

Make sure that you get the drums ground off smooth so you will not ruin the new barke pads.

Any good auto parts store (Old Style) will be anle to help you.

Check the pistons and seals as well.

  7. Unfortunately my workshop manual is 1988 but Indespension is still in existence and I am sure that by consulting their on line catalogue and getting your local stockist from them you will be able to get the correct parts. I know I have no trouble getting spares for my 1988 trailer from my local stockist who is also very helpful when I get stuck doing DIY on the trailer.

I am sure you will get all the help from the web site and your local dealer.

    Good luck
