  1. If this is a new trailer, you will need a certificate of origin in order to get a title for it from your state DMV, which will be necessary to get a license for it.

If you are buying this from an individual, he should have it licensed, and will have a title to the trailer. Have him sign it over to you, just like a title to a car. This may or may not need to be notarized. If the seller does not have the trailer licensed, and does not have a title, have him make out a bill of sale, saying who he is, his address, where he bought the trailer, its manufacturer, its model number and its serial number, that he is selling it to you, the selling price, and have this notarized.

Licensing requirements vary between states, so I can't tell you EXACTLY what you  will need there, but the above should cover you. Make certain that the seller will give you what you need if this will not do. If you are not 100% certain that the seller will do this, then wait to check with your DMV tomorrow BEFORE you buy the boat and trailer. They probably handle boat titles, also.

    Regards,

    Dan
