  1. as others have said, the engines are built for torque and higher rpm.also the electronic components are built to not emit sparks so your bilge does not explode. same as the air intake also has a spark arrestor. do not use automotive starters and alternators!

  2. A modern 5.0 boat motor is a version of the small block chevrolet V8 engine.Generally the block is a thicker overall casting which allows the block to tolerate internal rust longer(Salt Water especially)as well as stronger internal moving parts, allowing the motor to withstand the abuse of powering a boat. A boat motor has much more resistance at the normal 20-30 MPH than a similar motor in an automobile  (Compare it to driving a car up a steep hill for most of its service life) Boats are often operated at 3000 to 4000 RPM for hours at a time which is much higher than legal operation of a car would subject a motor to...Also...Boat motors have different camshafts,distributors,starters,alternat... Injection),computers, accessories etc. to make the Chevy V8 more suitable for boat use.5.0 chevrolet V8 engines are no longer used in GM cars...but..the marine long blocks(Block & cylinder head) are still manufactured for marine and some industrial applications...Over 30 million chevy V8s have been built since 1955 and it is the most economical V8 in the world

  3. they are the same but have addaptions for marine use. log on to mercruiser for details.

  4. Marine engines run under much different conditions than that of a automobile engine. Almost always under load. Therefore, they are built to higher specs, with tougher internal components. Cam, cranks, valves, rods, etc.
