i used a house ball for a long time and my average was around 150 to 160. i used the two finger method hooking the ball. i recently purchased a track temper so i could learn how to bowl for real. the guy at the pro shop told me to throw the ball like im throwing a underhand spiral with a football. ive been trying that and i cant get the right spin on the ball. my ball has more of a forward rotation and only moving about 2 boards. how can i get that sideways rotation and hook the ball?

  1. From the time I started bowling 26 years ago until now, the basics of bowling with three fingers from; staying behind the bowling ball, "shaking hands" during release, and following through, are the best things a beginner or professional can keep in mind when bowling.

    1.  Just breathe and relax

    2.  Visualize your target

    3.  Start your approach with bowling ball either chest high for faster speed, or held lower for slower speed

    4.  Keep your hand firmly behind and below the ball during backswing

    5.  Remain behind the ball during the start of your forward motion and make sure your arm is swinging like a pendulum

    6.  Let your thumb go smoothly during delivery and let your fingers steer the ball counterclockwise with your hand ending like you just shook someone's hand, ensuring it hits your target

    7.  Followthrough your arm towards your target and watch your ball do it's work based on it's coverstock and core shape

I'd say that if you want to convert to the conventional way of bowling, just make sure your instructor is certified by the USBC (has the certificate hanging on his wall or has his "coaches" card) and don't go by what so-called "advanced" bowlers say because they just want to show off to others that they are passing their "knowledge" over to inexperienced bowlers.....  In that case, they are just passing their "bad habits" over to you.

Of course, there are those like you who bowl with their own styles, which is still normal, because one of my twin sons utilizes the two finger, no thumb style with great success and a 200+ average.

He uses a very highly polished Brunswick International Dry Zone, which has one of the lowest hook rating reactive urethane coverstocks around.  That way, he does not over hook the pocket and is able to play everywhere on the lane from an extreme hook inside shot to a down and in straighter shot.  He also uses a three finger conventional style, but only when the oil is heavy and when he needs to use his Ultimate Inferno.

Good luck and just have fun on the lanes!

  2. just be like a softball player(just do not make a full circle like a softball player)just bring the halfway back  then let it go,along with you THREE fingers comeing out of the THREE holes.my emails is cleosimble@yahoo.com

  3. The way it was explained to me was to "shake hands" with the pins.

Make sure to keep your hand straight behind the ball until you release the ball. If done correctly, the thumb comes out of the ball first which allows your fingers to rotate the ball. Once your thumb is out of the ball, rotate your hand to simulate a handshake. Don't forget to follow through with your shot.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.
