  1. FAN BASE, how many people can your name put in  seat's

thats what it comes down to,

    ALso skill level obviously,

  2. It is diferent for diferent boxers and depends on how many fans they can bring to the fight. Someone like de la hoya who has an enormous fan base is gonna make a lot of money b/c by him fighting a lot of other people make lots of money. the  arena where the fight is held, the promoters, the trainers, and his crew.

  3. i heard that pacquiao got paid 5 million bucks for one of the fights..

  4. Boxer are not employees in terms of being on a "salary" but many young "good" prospects  find "sponsors","managers" with sufficient funds ($$$) that "take them over their wings"

so that they can spend all their time training in improving their boxing skills without having to get a job outside of boxing.

Good examples are:The very young Mike Tyson and Ali.

Then there are the "CLUB" fighters that comprises over half of all the active boxers everywhere.

This group needs an outside full time job to supplement their boxing income.

An example of these are the majority of boxers that fight the

smallers boxing arenas like St Nicholas Garden back east and some  preliminary fights in a big boxing card.

Some of this boxers are "discovered" in those fights and do "move up" the ranks along with big money.

Some "CLUB" boxers I knew ( 2 in the 80's )  fought for a flat fee plus expenses. Neither one ever made more than 12,000 a fight but when they won there was always "bonus cash" coming from other sources !!!)

(Notice how the IRS is always looking for "additional income" to tax from athletes and boxers in particular).

Once they reach name recognition and a good boxing record

a Boxer can command BIG money -In the millions- for fighting.

Unfortunatelly for the profession, very few finish their career with any substantial amount of money. Too many hang-ons

from managers all the way down to the bucket-man along with

life styles (la vida loca?) often affect their final financial situation.

  5. It all depends on a number of things.  First it depends on the boxer.  Oscar Dela Hoya would be paid more for fighting "Joe Donut"  than any two hvt. would be paid for fighting each other.

The other thing is politics.  Boxing is like a third world country in the sense that 99% of the wealth belongs to 1% of the population.  Oscar, Floyd and a small handfull of others earn more than everyone else in the sport combined.

Make a name for yourself and you can become rich in a few fights.  Dont make a name and you could fight your entire career and end up broke when you're done.

It helps to have a little common sense.  Larry Holmes dropped out of school in the 7th grade to help his mom with the rest of his siblings.  He'll never have to worry about money.  By contrast,  Mike Tyson and a few others, who made more than Larry,  went further in school than Larry had a chance to.   Many of them are broke.
