Braces- Ligature Bands

Question

How often do they change them? What would be the need to change them if you want your colors to stay the same?

what will my first adjustment be like? is any pain or discomfort involved?

the bands help move around your teeth too, and when they first put them on they are really strong. by the end of the month when its time to go back for your next appointment, they arent as strong because they have moved your teeth and now its time for a new one.

& plus, the colors lose their vibrancy and get really dingy.

your first adjustment will only hurt for about one or two days.

it never hurts while your getting it done but for a little while after it does.

They changed mine about once a month and they change them cause they are rubber and could break after so much time so you can just pick the same color everytime they change them and yes, it is painful but worth it and it kind of depends on what your idea of painful is, and how much work is having to be done. They are made out of rubber and they wear out.  I went about 3 months without having mine changed.  It was really bad because they started wearing out and they were discolored.  They were starting to look really ugly and they were weird tasting.  It's best to get them changed as often as possible.  Were you awake when they were put on?  You should have been.  When they take the rubber bands it just feels like they are touching your teeth lightly.  When they put the new ones on, it feels like they are pushing really hard on your teeth but it doesn't hurt.  It's annoying but not that bad.  What you have to worry about is when they take the actual braces off all the way.  They have to cut then off of your teeth and it feels like they are about to break out of your mouth.  Then, they have to grind the glue off and it makes your mouth feel all sticky and weird for a long time.  Don't break the wires!  I did that and my dad had to cut them off with dikes from the garage.  Then, when they tried to take them out, a little peice got stuck back in my gums and they were trying to get a hold of it but they kept pushing it into my gums and it hurt like the worse thing in the world.  I know it sounds scary and it is but it's not quite as bad as it sounds.  Just don't eat caremel apples. They tell you not to chew gum but I did all the time and nothing ever happened.  Also, they tell you not the eat corn on the cob.  I did and the only thing it did was make it easier to clean the stuff out of my teeth.

Your otho will probably let you change them every month.  Although you may want the colors to stay the same, over time, the little bands get weaker and weaker, and aren't able to do what they are supposed to efficiently.  So, even though you may get the same color, the bands need to be replaced, so that in time, you may be able to get your braces off sooner if you were to skip a couple of appointments  and not get the bands changed.  

Your first adjustment, and the ones after will start to become a routine thing.  The first thing that they'll do is take the bands off, and the wire.  Then, your ortho will see you, and examine your mouth.  Then, the assistant that's working on you will get the instructions that are necessary in knowing what to do.  After everything is set, you will probably get a thicker wire, and new colors.  There will be some discomfort because the thicker wire and new bands will be putting force on your teeth, but it will be nothing compared to the pain of when you first got your braces on.  Best of Luck at your first appointment!
