Brakes-every car is different?

Question

I'm looking at a used 02 Pontiac Grand Am GT with about 81,000 miles on it. However, the breaks feel like they are not working well. The owner tells me it's probably just because I'm used to my other car, but it doesn't feel sensitive at all and sometimes can't even stop.

I'm wondering about how much this would cost to get fixed. It's FWD. Thanks.

depends if it has rear drum or rear disc brakes. if it has rear drums you can actually have the rear brakes adjusted which in turn will make the brake pedal way more responsive than it is now. if it has rear disc brakes, the brakes stay adjusted by using the parking brake. there is a piston inside the caliper which is called an emergency brake activated caliper, meaning the more one uses the e-brake, the closer the tolerance between the piston and brake pad hence keeping a firmer brake pedal good luck
