Brescia vs. Roma – Horrendous refereeing continues
AS Roma continued their abysmal start to the 2010/11 season with yet another defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Brescia; Roma lost 2 – 1. Caracciolo scored from the spot after Mexes was shown a straight red card for a foul. Ranieri was surprisingly upbeat
about his team’s performance but the entire Roma hierarchy blasted the Russian official Nola after the match. Ranieri and director Daniele Prade were shaking with rage.
“You should not be penalized in this way. It’s a shame. What should I tell my players after such direction by the Russian and Ayroldi? He was a disaster at the World Cup, and now he has done it again.” Ayroldi was the linesman for the controversial Argentina
– Mexico match and allowed Carlos Tevez’s goal to stand when he was several yards offside. The refereeing during the match was poor and Roma director claimed Gilarossi was denied at least three clear cut penalties, while several offside decisions went against
them. “How could that not be a penalty on Borriello? The referee was standing just two yards from him and didn’t penalise the opposition,” fumed the director.
To add further to Roma’s misery, defender Philippe Mexes was shown a straight red after the Brazilian collided with the defender on the edge of the box. The assistant referee did not call for a foul but the match referee took it up on himself and deduced
that there had been a foul. Unbelievable, Brescia was awarded a penalty. Mexes lost his cool and squared up to the referee before he was dragged off the pitch by his teammates.
Prade had some words to spare for the incident “we left the pitch without Mexes, especially since he was accused of a foul that was non-existent and a penalty that should not have been given. What am I supposed to say to my players, the tactician? This is
just unacceptable and we demand a withdrawal of this referee.” Prade then spoke on that he expects the Italian refereeing authorities to answer for the horrendous refereeing.
Serie A has been plagued by poor refereeing in the recent years. Since the revelation of Calciopoli, every refereeing error is attributed to a conspiracy. Indeed some believe the low level of refereeing coupled with football related violence has seen the
match attendances go rocking down. In the wake of recent events, the Serie A authorities and Italian refereeing association will have to take drastic measures and the league may lose its charm even further.
