Question:

Broadway songs for alto

I am preparing to audition for my school's musical this upcoming fall, and need a song to audition with. Unfortunately, my voice has gotten deeper over the past few years so I cannot use the songs I sang in the past for auditions. Does anyone know any alto-part songs from broadway shows that are good for singing acapella?

  1. Try one of these:

    Little Lamb from Gypsy

Worst Pies in London from Sweeney Todd

When You're Good to Mama from Chicago

A Little Brains, A Little Talent from d**n Yankees

There's a Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q

My New Philosophy from You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown

    Stepsisters' Lament from R&H's Cinderella

What I Did For Love from A Chorus Line

Somewhere That's Green from Little Shop of Horrors

    Hope that helps a little!

  2. It depends on what you're looking for. "I Cain't Say No" from Oklahoma is a very character piece, upbeat and silly. "Someone Like You" from Jekyll & Hyde is absolutely beautiful. "Holding Out For a Hero" from Footloose is a pretty good belt song. "On My Own" from Les Miserables is another beautiful one for an alto. If you find a lead female that is an alto, you could sing any of their songs, such as Elphaba from Wicked or Aida from Aida. I would suggest picking something that is a similar style as the music in whatever musical you are trying out for.

  3. The Wizard and I-Wicked

    My Strongest Suit-Aida

The Dark I Know Well-Spring Awakening

Every Story is a Love Sotry-Aida

Stranger in the Rain-Children of Eden

See I'm Smiling-The Last Five Years

    Out Tonight-Rent

    All that Jazz-Chicago

    Cell Block Tango-Chicago

    Mama Who Bore Me-Spring Awakening

The Spark of Creation-Children of Eden

  4. I'm not entirely sure because I never had a lot of exposure to vocal ranges but Mama Who Bore Me, from Spring Awakening gets pretty low for a woman singing, you could check that out. The Song of Purple Summer, from the same show, has a beautiful alto part. It was a group number originally, but I'd bet if you just got a songbook you'd be OK. If you whipped Purple Summer out at a school audition you'd be golden. That show only won eleven Tony's. =/
