Question:

Budgies wings to short?

I just my budgie yesterday, but the pet store clipped all his primary feathers so he can't get more then a few inches off the ground of his cage. I'm really upset that they did this because now he can't stay perched or reach his food and water, I had to put them on the ground so he could eat and drink.

Is there anything I could do, I also noticed that they clipped all of the budgies feathers in the same way.

How long will to take for his feathers to grow back, and will he be ok?

  1. Sounds like it is young Parakeet. If feathers are clipped too short it will affect the balance of the bird. Feathers that are clipped will have to drop out of the bird and be replace with new feathers in a few months.

When feathers are clipped by a Professional only the first 6 to 7 flight feathers should be clipped just below the secondary feathers. Never should the secondary feathers be cut, that is too dangerous for the bird.

Until the new feathers come in the bird will have to learn how to compensate to regain its balance. Try lowering the perch to the bottom of the cage, put it about 2 inches above the floor of the cage because a healthy bird does not like to sit on the cage floor.

  2. Budgies wings grow back quite quickley. He should be fine just hold him often to help him get used to you and to practice perching.

When I got my first budgie they clipped her wings but they grew back except now I never clip hers and she is now a mommy.

Your budgie will be fine just give him loads of love.
