Build a sailing ship?

Question

I am looking to build a sailing vessel. (modeled after a brigantine)

70-100' Length x 30-40' Beam x 20' Depth.

managing Ballast?

Keel Type?

Registration for international sailing.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Other recent builds you might want to contact are the brigantines Irving Johnson and Electra Johnson, working out of southern California; Pride of Baltimore II, Californian, Spirit of Massachusetts;

the folks at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard up in Maine have experience building ships this size; they, if they think you are serious and have some money and aren't wasting their time, can give you a wild *** ballpark number...

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute operate Corwith Cramer and Westward, two 120 steel brigantines modeled after Irving and "Lexi's Johnson's legendary Yankee; they may give you an idea of what the operating costs are....

if you intend to operate this as a passenger vessels.ie people pay money to come on board; or as a school ship.ie there is a recognized teaching program happening aboard, you will have to build and operate her to SOLAS  or USCG standards for a passenger/sail training vessel. The USCG stuff is in CFR 47, and just the safety gear alone is about 250,000 for a ship this size.....you will also have to have USCG or the =, and/or surveyor/insurance people approve every step of the design and every step of the construction,

The Burke family Windjammer Cruises is rumored to be in desperate financial trouble, with canceled sailings and their ships tied to the docks........maybe a fire sale there soon; be prepared to spend millions to bring them up to date

If you want to race it i would look at other maxi yachts and their design, as well as layouts of many different other yachts. I would look at a canting keel like the maxi yachts have the only downside to them is they have an engine that runs all of the time but otherwise the keel will be longer had heavier. You will probably need to make it out of carbon fiber as it is light a yacht that size in fiberglass would be too heavy. Making a boat would be a great experience but unless you have a huge crew to work on it you will never get it done. To get a yacht this size making it is your best way unless you can get a used one byt it is not as good as a used one. good luck with it

my uncle built a small boat.  ugly as sin..I think he set out to save money.  I think he may have saved 5 dollars.

How much money are you planning to spend?  I would guess it would cost about $6 million with $300k/yr to operate.  The last sailing ship built in the USA was the Armistad at Mystic Seaport.  It cost $3.5 million and was launched May 2000 using many man-hours of unpaid volunteer labor.  If you have that much money to chase a dream, send me a few thousand so I can buy a modest daysailer.

Lots of money.  Talk to some ship designers, they should help you out on what you want.  Go to The mother of all marine links.  This page will help out on find a ship designer to a ship yard to build it.  It is going to be expensive
